Starting with oil paints…

A little bit about the process…

Starting with a new medium can feel rather daunting… and it took me almost a year to take the plunge and try oil paints.

But it has been exciting , sometimes frustrating, and interesting!

Some people find using oil rather annoying as they take a while to dry, and I sometimes feel that too, but it has the advantage of being workable, that is you can rework the layers, for a while, as opposed to using acrylic paints that dry really fast. Although I know that you can use mediums to make the paints dry slower/ quicker depending on your needs.

I am still at the beginning of the journey with oils, and exploring different mediums and ways to make the paint thinner, or thicker, dry faster or slower. I am enjoying the texture of the paints and How they spread on the canvas.

I bought 10 small 15x15cm canvas boards to begin with and explored with some abstract landscapes.

My process is quite intuitive and meditative. But for this one I did have an idea at the start, of the shape, and the reflective idea, as well as where I wanted the light to be. But from then, it evolved organically, slowly, layer by layer… until I decided it was finished… which is sometimes the hardest thing! Knowing when to stop… but that’s for another blog post…
